Who:
National Consumers League, 101 year old, private, nonprofit, membership
organization dedicated to identifying, protecting, representing, and advancing
the economic and social interests of consumers and workers.
What:
2000 conference, “Environmentally Conscious Consumers” will bring grassroots
consumer groups, educators, business, labor, nonprofit leaders, and regulators
together to discuss the role consumers play in the environment.

Highlights:

Young
activists from Racine Earth Service Youth United, Juneau High School
(Milwaukee Public Schools), Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group, Associated
Students of Madison, and the United Kingdom will share their
strategies for raising environmental consciousness among consumers.
·
David
Morris of
the Institute for Local Self Reliance will discuss relevant choices
consumers can make to protect the environment in his keynote address, Science
Friction: Weighing Risks, Making Choices.
·
The Honorable Alice Clausing, Wisconsin State Senator,
will participate in a panel discussing Clean Water: Pollution Sources and
Solutions.
·
Genetically
Modified Organisms, or GMOs, will be examined by panelists Dave Fredrickson of
the Minnesota Farmers Union and Rebecca Goldberg of
Environmental Defense, both members of the USDA Advisory Committee on
Biotechnology.
·
Susan Mudd of Citizens for a Better Environment will facilitate the dialogue
on Public Health and the Environment. Former farmworker Floribella Redondo
of the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs will talk
about teaching workers about pesticides.

Ken Alston of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. and
Jack Brill of Natural Investment Services will participate on a panel
discussing how consumers and businesses can invest in the environment.
