NCL to Honor Mary Gardiner Jones with 2003 Florence Kelley Consumer Leadership Award

Who: Mary Gardiner Jones, 2003 recipient.


What: The Florence Kelley Consumer Leadership Award is given to an individual that exemplifies a commitment to social justice for consumers and workers; has a willingness to give time, energy and leadership to important causes that may not be popular; knows how to work the system as a political strategist on behalf of social and economic causes; has worked within and visibly supported the consumer movement for at least several years; is a skilled public educator with the ability to dramatize issues and make them understandable, and cares deeply about the causes and has the capacity to work for them with intelligence and focus.

About Mary Gardiner Jones:

·        Federal Trade Commissioner from 1964-1973.

·        President and founder of the Consumer Interest Research Institute (CIRI) and President of the Alliance for Public Technology.

·        Board member of The Institute for the Future; the DC Chapter of the Mental Health Association; the Homemakers Health Aide Services, Inc.; and the United Seniors Health Cooperative.

·        Co-author of 21st Century Learning and Health Care in the Home: Creating a National Telecommunications Network and author of several papers on consumer and telecommunications issues.

·        Recipient of distinguished service awards from the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals, honorary member of the American Home Economics Association, and, in 1992, the Colston E. Warne Distinguished Lecturer at the Association of Consumer Interests.
