NCL Applauds Approval of First Nonprescription
Relief for Migraine Headaches

Washington, DC... The National Consumers League applauded today's action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the first nonprescription product for the relief of migraine headache pain, Excedrin Migraine. Migraine headaches affect more than 16 million Americans each year.

"By making over-the-counter medication available to help manage migraine pain, FDA improves the quality of life for millions of sufferers," said NCL's President Linda F. Golodner.

NCL testified in favor of the FDA approval last year. Excedrin Migraine contains the same formula as Excedrin Extra Strength, which has been on the market for 20 years.

"We are pleased that FDA requested that Excedrin Migraine have its own trademark and packaging distinct from Excedrin Extra Strength. We think this provides an extra level of education and specific information for migraine sufferers," added Golodner. "In this age when consumers are taking greater responsibility for their own health, it's important that consumers have clear information about health products." The migraine product includes specific information about appropriate use and when to see a doctor.

"Obviously, there are times when consumers should see a doctor, and the manufacturer provides that information right on the label," Golodner stated.
