NCL, injury victims call on CPSC to mandate new national safety performance standard for table saws

With 40,000 people injured each year, and a federal safety rule that has been stalled since 2003, NCL and victims of brutal table saw injuries are calling on the Consumer Product Safety Commission today to take immediate, decisive steps to set a new, more protective national safety performance standard for table saws.

NCL releases Five Most Dangerous Jobs for Teens 2011 Report

As the academic year is winding down for teens across the country, many are in search of that elusive summer job. NCL is warning teens this summer, however, against the most dangerous jobs and reminding teens and parents alike that, every day in the United States, about 400 teens are hurt on the job; every two weeks, a teen is killed at work.

National Consumers League applauds legislative fix for the court’s anti-consumer ruling in AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion

NCL is praising the introduction of the Arbitration Fairness Act (S. 987 and H.R. 1873), which would eliminate forced arbitration clauses in employment, consumer, and civil rights cases, and which would effectively override the Supreme Court’s recent decision in AT&T v. Concepcion.

NCL calling on FTC to end deceptive 'corn sugar' ads

The National Consumers League, in a letter to the commission, is urging the Federal Trade Commission to quickly put an end to false and deceptive advertising by the Corn Refiners Association, which is currently running a series of television commercials that refer to High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) as “corn sugar," calling such advertising claims “false” and in violation of the FTC Act as “unfair and deceptive” advertising.

NCL statement on Supreme Court arbitration decision in AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion

Yesterday’s unfortunate 5-4 Supreme Court decision, which included a strong dissent by Justices Breyer, Sotomayor, Ginsburg and Kagan, will allow companies to drastically curtail the fundamental right of consumers or workers to bring a class action when there is evidence of fraud, discrimination or other illegal practices.

Financial Literacy Month: National Consumers League challenging teens to be ‘LifeSmart’ at annual consumer education competition

Just in time for April’s Financial Literacy Month, the National Consumers League (NCL) has announced the 34 state champion teams who have earned a spot at the 2011 National LifeSmarts Championship, which will take place this year in Hollywood, CA, April 30 - May 3. LifeSmarts (www.lifesmarts.org) is NCL’s 17-year-old program that educates teens and tweens on real-world financial and consumer literacy issues.

NCL calls on FDA to crack down on misleading claims for tomato sauces made from concentrate

In letters to the Food and Drug Administration and to industry, NCL praised ConAgra/Hunt’s for modifying some of its misleading labels on tomato sauce products while criticizing Del Monte, Contadina for continuing to use deceptive product claims.

NCL marks anniversary of Upper Big Branch Mine tragedy that killed 29 workers

On the one-year anniversary of the tragic explosion in the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, the National Consumers League is calling upon Congress to enact the Mine Safety and Health Act.
