Consumer Groups' Statement of Tolerance
in Response to the September 11, 2001 Tragedies

In the wake of the tragic loss of life in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania, we have lost our sense of safety and security, and some people have reacted with hate and violence against people they think of as "foreign."

The National Consumers League and other consumer advocacy organizations urges Americans everywhere to judge people as individuals and not by their ethnicity.

We should recall the thousands of people who lost their lives in these tragedies and the hundreds more who worked valiantly to save them. They are the face of America, and, to honor them, we should reinforce our respect and attention to the civil liberties of all.
